Airwolf C64 The Game

Airwolf was an officially licensed game from the Universal Pictures television series of the same name.  This Commodore 64 version was better than the C16 version, slightly easier, but still a difficult game.

This game was also released on Amstrad CPC, BBC Micro, Commodore 16, Plus/4, Enterprise and ZX Spectrum.

Airwolf on the C64, had hardly anything to do with the TV series, apart from the music and the helicopter.  If the TV Series was better it could have made it onto my list of Worst Game Adaptations of Good Movies and TV Series.

The gameplay sees you “Stringfellow Hawke” flying around in a cave, that is meant to be an underground terrorists base.  Avoiding obstacles such as falling boulders and (missiles?) not sure what some of it is meant to be.

airwolf Commodore 64 gameplay

You have to rescue five scientists that have been kidnapped and imprisoned in the tortuous caves by General Zaranov.  You clear your path through the caves by shooting through walls or destroying control boxes.  There is often no clue as to what you have to do.  Most of the time it is just trial and error.

Is Airwolf on the C64 Naff?

Well, it’s not as bad as the C16 version, but it’s still pretty poor.  The graphics are ok nothing great.  The music is great, for a short while anyway.  It then becomes annoying as it plays on a constant loop.  The controls work, but they are a bit tricky as the helicopter keeps dropping.  Its like they have made attempt to simulate the helicopters controls, but it just doesn’t work.  The gameplay isn’t the best either and it leans a bit too far towards the impossible side.  Overall, Airwolf on the C64 an average game that can be very frustrating. I give it a generous 5/10.
