Turbo Outrun The Game

Turbo Outrun was released in 1990 on the Commodore 64 and what can I say “it was brilliant”. It was an amazing conversion considering the limitations of the machine.

Turbo Outrun is possibly one of, if not the best arcade car racing game to be released on the C64.  There are 16 stages to drive through as you travel across the US starting in New York and finishing in Los Angeles.

As you drive your Ferrari F40 you have to avoid other vehicles and complete each stage within a given time limit.  Hitting other cars or hazards slows you down or spins you out of control taking precious seconds from you.  At the start of the game you have the option to choose manual or automatic transmission and after a number of stages you have a choice of upgrades available for your speedy Ferrari F40.  Don’t forget your “Turbo” Booster, this will increase your speed but can also cause your car to overheat with continued use.

Is Turbo Outrun on the Commodore 64 Naff?

Short answer… NO!  Turbo Outrun on the Commodore 64 is an excellent game.  The graphics and visuals are well drawn and colourful.  The soundtrack is fantastic.  The gameplay is good with smooth scrolling and great control response.  Combined them all and Turbo Outrun gives the Commodore 64 user an arcade experience at home.

The downsides to Turbo Outrun on the Commodore 64 was for me.  The road seemed way to small for the car (or the car was to big), the hazards and other vehicles were at times a bit glitchy and there was the problematic multi-loading.  All really very minor negatives to what is otherwise a fantastic game.
