Mike Tyson’s Punch Out!! The Game

You play as a young fighter from the Bronx called “Little Mac”.  At the start of the game you are in the minor circuit and ranked number 3.  The aim of the game is to work your way up through the circuits, winning 14 bouts through the minor, major and world circuits.  Where you’ll finally be able to challenge Mike Tyson in “The Dream Fight”.

Each bout has 3, 3 minute rounds.  A knock-out (KO) is ruled by the referee “Mario” if you or your opponent are knocked down for a count of 10.  A Technical Knock Out (TKO) is awarded if a boxer is knocked down 3 times in one round.  If you both make it to the end of the bout, “Mario” the referee determines the winner with a technical decision from how many points you have earned.

If you lose a match you drop back and must fight a previous opponent.  Lose three times and it’ll be Game Over!  All the opponents have differing abilities and techniques and will require you to tactically approach each fight differently.

You have health meter in the game that lowers each time you get hit.  Once you health meter is drained you will be knocked down.  You must tap the A and B buttons to try and get back up before the 10 count is reached.  There is also a heart meter, this is the amount of punches you can throw.  If a punch misses or is blocked the heart meter will go down.  Once empty you will not be able to attack and must block or dodge the opponents punches to get it to refill.  You also have star punches, these are gained when hitting an opponent at certain times during the bout.

There is also a hidden World Circuit in the game where only 1 defeat means Game Over!  it is known as “Another World Circuit” and is accessed by entering the code “135-792-4680” and simultaneously pressing the A, B, and Select button.  To finish this circuit you must defeat 9 fighters: King Hippo, Great Tiger, Piston Honda, Soda Popinski, Bald Bull, Don Flamenco, Mr. Sandman, Super Macho Man and Mike Tyson.
